Espoo is ranked sixth in the Patent Index 2023 published by the European Patent Office. Espoo files the sixth most patents of all cities in Europe. Espoo's innovation players made 60.5% of all patent applications in Finland.

Marubeni Corporation and Nordic Bioproducts Group Oy (NBG) have signed a MoU. Through the collaboration, the companies aim to establish a biorefinery business utilising NBG's AaltoCellTM technology, focusing on processing woody bioass from Marubeni's plantations in South Sumatra, Indonesia.
