Espoo-based VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the quantum computing hardware startup IQM have built Finland's first 5-qubit quantum computer. The quantum computer is now operational and is the first step in VTT and IQM's initiative to construct a 50-qubit quantum computer by 2024.

The launch of the 5-qubit system showcases VTT and IQM's capability to produce quantum computers that are scalable and more readily available for companies looking to harness quantum computing for their business.

This achievement is the latest milestone for VTT in its 30-year journey in quantum technology research. IQM, meanwhile, prove that they are one of the few companies capable of delivering on-premise quantum computers.

The quantum computer is located in Espoo in VTT's premises at Micronova.
