Aalto University launches IQM-built quantum computer for education and research

Aalto University has announced Aalto Q20, a new quantum computer for education and research purposes. The computer, owned by Aalto and already installed in the school's premises, was deployed by IQM Quantum Computers.

The new 20-qubit system is the fourth quantum computer to be installed in Finland, and also the fourth to be delivered by IQM. IQM, and cryogenics manufacturer Bluefors, which also contributed crucial components to Aalto Q20, have both originated from Aalto University. IQM is headquartered only one kilometer away from the university campus in Espoo.

The new system will enable Aalto to keep educating world-class quantum talent. According to an estimate, Finland's quantum industry will need 3,000 new employees by 2035 to keep its leading position in quantum computing. A recent report ranked Espoo and the greater Helsinki region as the world's number two quantum cluster.

Besides education, Aalto Q20 will be used to develop new quantum technologies.

"Q20 allows Aalto to have its own computer for researchers to easily access and students in the quantum technology major will get to use it as part of their studies, which is rare even on a global scale," Aalto University Professor Tapio Ala-Nissilä sums up in IQM's press release.
