VTT leads the creation of the Finnish sustainable textile industry

Share

Finland is developing a sustainable textile industry with research institutions such as the Espoo-based VTT leading the way.

As the textile industry is one of the major contributors to pollution globally, innovation is needed to make the industry more sustainable. In Finland, efforts are underway to make textiles recyclable by 2023, two years before separate recycling collections of textiles become mandatory in EU countries.

VTT is a key player in the transition to a sustainable textile industry, having conducted extensive research into creating textiles from raw materials in a sustainable manner. Two companies have emerged from VTT’s innovation in sustainable textiles, including Espoo-based Infinited Fiber that recycles waste and turns it into textiles that feel and look like cotton.
