VTT opens pilot plant to turn captured carbon dioxide into plastics and chemicals

Share

VTT opened a pilot plant in Espoo, Finland, to turn captured carbon dioxide into materials that can replace fossil fuels in making plastics and chemicals.

The plant, set up in sea containers at the Bioruukki pilot centre, began operating in August 2024 and offers Finland an opportunity to become one of the leading countries in using bio-based carbon dioxide. The project is done in cooperation with LUT University and companies.

Earlier, VTT and LUT's Forest CUMP research project studied how carbon dioxide from the forest industry and waste incineration can be turned into valuable products like polypropylene and polyethylene. Now, the new pilot plant will put these ideas to the test at the Bioruukki pilot centre in Espoo.
