Espoo has reached the World Smart City Awards competition finals alongside cities from China and Colombia. Espoo's Impact Leadership program, which focuses on using data-driven decision-making to improve city management, has earned a nomination in the main category of the World Smart City Awards. The winner will be announced in Barcelona on 6 November 2024.

The World Smart City Awards recognise cities that excel in innovative projects aimed at enhancing urban life, sustainability, and financial profitability.

Espoo's Impact Leadership program has been key to its success, integrating data and analysis into decision-making across city departments. Developed in collaboration with VTT, the program uses pilot projects and a specialised training program to improve how the city tackles complex social issues. This training program, which has been running since 2019, teaches city staff systems thinking and methods to handle societal challenges through data.

In this year's competition, Espoo will compete against Shenzhen and Santiago de Cali. The awards received 429 entries from 64 countries. Espoo's program focuses on local improvements and serves as a model for other cities globally.
