Spin-off companies from VTT, the largest applied research institution in the Nordics, raise a significant portion of capital funding invested in the Finnish startup ecosystem. Between 2013 and 2022, startups created at VTT got 8.2% of the total investment haul raised by Finnish startups. VTT's startups received €526 million out of the €6.4 billion collected by Finnish companies.
Espoo-based startups spinning out of VTT and Aalto University form the core of Finland's deep tech startup scene. While the share of funding is significant, the potential impact these science-based startups can achieve is far greater. The startups share the focus of their parent organisations to address global challenges and produce sustainable growth.
Here are some notable startups that have come out of VTT and Aalto University in recent years:
- IQM — Europe's leading quantum computer hardware company
- Infinited Fiber — a producer of cotton-like fibre made from regenerated textile waste
- ICEYE — one of the leading providers of earth imagery in the world
- eniferBio — producer of sustainable fungal protein derived from food and agricultural by-products
