In 2024, Espoo-based organisations were responsible for most of patent applications in Finland. According to recent statistics of Finnish Patent and Registration Office, the five most active patent applicants are all based in Espoo.
Nokia continued as the unquestionable leader of this ranking. Its business groups submitted 524 patent applications in total – a 20-percent increase from 2023.
“Over the last few years, Nokia has continued to increase investments in R&D,” says Sami Saru, VP Head of Patent Portfolio at Nokia.
This has led to a higher number of patent applications, Saru explains.
Most of Nokia’s patents are related to 5G and 6G technology. Besides, Nokia has patents related to, for example, Wi-Fi connectivity and video and audio coding.
